Over 2 000 arrested as Limpopo cops clamp down on crime

More than R200 000 worth of illicit cigarettes were confiscated during joint operations by police.

LIMPOPO – A joint operation by police in Limpopo have led to the arrests of more than 2 000 people, according to a statement by Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

The operations, which were conducted through roadblocks, tracing of wanted suspects, Covid-19 compliance monitoring, visits at shopping malls as well stop and searches were conducted around the province from the past week and concluded this morning.

During the operation, three suspects between the ages of 26 and 45 were apprehended for a robbery committed on 18 August in Ga-Seleka, Witpoort, outside Lephalale.

“The Lephalale Crime Intelligence Unit and detectives conducted investigations and recovered eight 20 litre cans of diesel and a bakkie,” he added.

Mojapelo said others were arrested for various crimes including rape, sexual assault, fraud, stock theft, intimidation, murder, smuggling of illicit cigarettes, possession of suspected stolen properties, poaching, possession of drugs, possession of endangered species and house robberies, among others.

“Police managed to seize firearms and ammunition, motor vehicles, plasma television sets, airtime vouchers, cellphones, liquor and rhino carcasses.” More than R200 000 worth of illicit cigarettes, 5 026 grams of dagga, 201 grams of nyaope and 124 801 counterfeit goods were also confiscated.

The three suspects arrested for the robbery in Lephalale are expected to appear in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court, today.

“The rest of the suspects, between the ages 18 and 58, have already started appearing before various magistrate’s courts across the province,” concluded Mojapelo.
