Donating sanitary pads on her birthday to give back to the community

Jamela Maswanganyi wants to spend her birthday making a difference in the lives of young girls from underprivileged backgrounds.

POLOKWANE – LLB student, Jamela Maswanganyi spends her birthday with friends and family each year but this year, she wants to celebrate it differently by giving back to the community.

She told BONUS that there are many girls missing school because they lack basic needs such as sanitary pads. “I wanted to find a way to assist girls/women in my community by supporting and uplifting them with their basic needs, so I felt this drive would also be a great way of celebrating my birthday.”

She says women should not be reluctant to start drives like hers because chances are, it will thrive beyond expectation. “I noticed first hand that women love empowering each other. Also, it’s about giving back and changing lives one step at a time. That should be the main purpose of it,” she advised.

Jamela is working with the Lighthouse Cavant Church in Seshego and the Nkowankowa community, outside Tzaneen and hopes to move to other areas within Limpopo. “I wanted to celebrate my birthday in a more meaningful way and not make my birthday about me but to help others because I come from a place of privilege and I feel that it is important for someone to use their privileges to help others,” she said.

Heaven Maswanganyi, the Director of Telegenix Trading and Carol Maswanganyi Director of Q Pharmacy Retail have agreed to help sponsor her drive and she is hoping to get more donations to make her drive worthwhile.
