Mokopane lawyer arrested for smuggling a cellphone and drugs into holding cells
A police officer working at the Mahwelereng Police Station became suspicious of the bag the lawyer was carrying
MOKOPANE – A 31-year-old man, believed to be a lawyer at a law firm in Mokopane was arrested at the Mahwelereng Police Station on Tuesday morning, 8 September.
The lawyer attempted to smuggle drugs and a cellphone into the police cells, according to a statement by Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.
“He arrived at the police station at about 11:30, wanting to consult one of the inmates who was due to appear in court. A police officer working in the cells became suspicious of the bag the lawyer was carrying and called her colleague to search it,” Mojapelo added.


He said a cellphone, dagga and sachets of nyaope were found packaged in a plastic bag.
“The man was later taken to the Mokerong Magistrate’s Court where he appeared on a charge of possession of drugs. He was released on a warning and his case was postponed to 27 November for further police investigations,” Mojapelo confirmed.
The arrest has been welcomed by Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba. “The vigilance and alertness of the policewoman on duty is commendable and must be sustained at all detention facilities,” he concluded.
