Taxi association, Muslim community fight crime together
The Seshego Taxi Association has joined hands with the Muslim community with one common goal in mind: fighting crime in the CBD.
POLOKWANE – According to Gerald Kgabo Mangaba, the association’s Chairperson for drivers, passengers are scared to travel to town because of the high level of crime.
“This partnership came at the right time. Our aim is to work hand-in-hand with the Muslim community as well as the police because if our passengers aren’t coming to town, we both lose out on profit,” he said.
Salman Hamid, a representative of the Muslim community in the city, told BONUS that they are eager to work with the Seshego Taxi Association to eradicate crime.
“We have noted a trend that many of our stores are targeted by thieves on Sunday afternoons because they are aware that there are less people in town. We are saying that enough is enough,” he said.
Together, the group patrol targeted streets in the CBD such as Market, Paul Kruger, and Boom Streets and their efforts have led to nine perpetrators being handed over to the police. This was confirmed by the Polokwane Police’s Detective Commander, Col Linky Mathebula who told BONUS that the group’s efforts are appreciated as working hand in hand with them will eradicate the crime in the city.
“In order for customers to feel safe in their stores, they should act on any criminal behaviour. We encourage the Seshego Taxi Association and Muslim community to continue opening cases against criminals,” she said. Mathebula further encouraged those who have been affected by crime to open cases with the police.
