3 killed in R101 collision near the Ranch

This brings the total number of people killed on Limpopo's road this weekend to eight.

POLOKWANE – Three people were killed earlier this morning after two vehicles, a sedan and a bakkie, collided near the Protea Hotel The Ranch Resort.

According to the Department of Transport and Community Safety’s Media Liaison Officer, Mike Maringa, the driver of the sedan is in critical condition.

“The driver of the bakkie managed to escape with minor injuries,” he said.

Maringa added that the driver (31) of a hatchback died last night, during a head-on collision with a sedan on the R71 near Polokwane. “Reckless and negligent driving was revealed as the possible cause of the accident,” Maringa explained.

Yesterday, three people were killed in another incident on the province’s roads. Currently, the number of fatalities recorded is less compared to the nine registered in the previous weekend.

“The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya urges drivers to be cautious to minimize accidents. The province is encouraging a zero fatal October Transport month,” Maringa added.

He said in the past weekend, law enforcement officers had to charge 311 people for speeding, while 570 people were screened for alcohol use, of which 39 were arrested for drunk driving.

With rain expected for most of Sunday, Maringa called for motorists to drive with caution as slippery roads are a high accident risk when speed is involved.
