Polokwane Mayor punts local art, says it needs more exposure

POLOKWANE Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng says there is a lot of local talent that needs more exposure and she is encourages artists to take advantage of the Polokwane Municipal Art Museum exhibition programme, which gives them an opportunity to showcase their talent. Nkadimeng was responding to a portrait of her, painted by local artist, Madonna Mmatli (29).
BONUS spoke to Mmatli who said he painted the Mayor as she has inspired him in many ways. “I have met and spoken to her a few times and every time, she has always been kind. I met her while assisting with a 10 Years of Freedom logo at their offices and in the process, she also advised me on various aspects concerning my career,” he said.

He added that he respects her as she is a hard worker, especially as a female in a leading position, and she has always been helpful, for which he is grateful.
Regarding the portrait, Nkadimeng described it as “lovely, with room for improvement” and said it seems to emphasise the celebration of cultural heritage. “It reminds me of Koko Esther Mahlangu, who was recently commissioned to paint the latest BMW model in Germany. Her works are high in demand and this is due to her many years of hard work and dedication to her craft. She paints with a chicken feather, I guess something that has never been heard before in the art industry,” she said.
Madonna, who recently painted the hallway of the Mankweng Hospital’s Maternity Ward, believes there is immense rural talent in Limpopo and that those artists should be recognised through exhibitions and local markets. Nkadimeng, in agreement, encouraged Mmatli to contact the Art Museum’s art curator, Amos Letsoalo regarding exhibition programmes and information about opportunities offered by the South African Art Bank. “The Art Museum is currently hosting a new acquisition exhibition” she said.

The Mayor further advised Mmatli and other local artists to not work in isolation, but associate and meet with others. “Take time if you can, to visit our local art galleries to see new exhibitions and what other artists are doing, in order to grow and perfect your craft. Be consistent and dedicated to your craft. There are a number of local artists who are currently making it big, for example, Nelson Makamu from Modimolle (featured with Oprah Winfrey in Times Magazine in 2019) and Dineo Bopape, an internationally renowned artist from Polokwane. These artists are proof that there is enough talent in our region and all that is needed is just exposure and a need for our people (who can) to learn to invest in it,” she added.
A philanthropist by nature, Madonna gives back to the community with the profit he makes, by teaching children to paint, draw and create their own toys by hand. He adds that art is something that cannot be taught, it is something you are born with.
The muncipality’s Head of Communications, Matshidiso Mothapo advised Mmatli to get in touch with their office regarding his portrait.
