Piet Hugo teacher ready to take the learners to the next level

Haruzelle Fichardt is not a new face at Piet Hugo Primary School, but is a teacher who is excited to have her own class this year.

POLOKWANE – She joined Piet Hugo as a student teacher in 2016 while studying B.Ed foundation phase at Unisa. Last year was a big year for her as she not only graduated but also got married.

“I grew up in Polokwane and completed my school career at Hoërskool Pietersburg. The plan was to take a gap year, but I just could not sit and do nothing. I applied for an open position at the school and was offered the job after my interview.”

Haruzelle graduated in mid-2020. She explains the school is ready to open.

“There were so many Gr 1 entries that the school had to open a new class. So they are transforming the lapa into a classroom for me. Previously I was involved with the Gr 2’s and hopefully next year I will have them again. I love working with the foundation phase learners as I already have some experience with the younger ones.

“The best part is when you see the understanding in their eyes as they grasp the concepts you are explaining.”

Working with children is not that challenging, Haruzelle says. “You first have to take a backseat and allow the child to show you his or her level of learning and understanding. Then you take them to the next level.” Haruzelle is also involved with netball and hockey at the school. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Julius, and their dogs, spending time in nature or just relaxing in front of the television.
