Another successful book drive for local NPO
Give a Child a Book held a book drive at Capricorn High School recently.
Give a Child a Book is a non-profit organisation founded in 2018 by a group of former Capricorn High School learners, who, after completing matric, noticed they had a lot of learning material for which they had little purpose.
The organisation held a book drive at their former school on Saturday, 27 February which was open to the public.
Fanessa Makhongela says that Give a Child a Book was founded to ensure those books found a new home, and the group has assisted several learners to achieve their academic goals.
Makhongela says they initially wanted Gr 12 study material but the book drive has evolved over the years to supply for all grades including leisure books.
During the first book drive, held early in 2019, the foundation managed to gather 300 books which were donated to an underprivileged school in the Mankweng area.
“In our second year we managed to gather just over 3 000 books and the target for this year’s book drive is 6 000.”
Makhongela says that the organisation rotates the donations across all five districts and has hopes to expand it across the country.
Fanessa says the costs of running a non-profit organisation often leaves the team dry, and marketing the book drive has also been an issue.
“We currently have nine members in the organisation who have been responsible for driving the book project and the donations.”
The book drive is held annually, but those who want to donate throughout the year can contact Fanessa at 076 497 2337.
