Fuel prices push up local taxi fares

Communters will have to pay more for a taxi ride come November 26 as the Seshego Polokwane Taxi Association (SPTA) announced a fare increase.

POLOKWANE – The increase has been attributed to the rise in fuel prices as well as vehicle maintenance. Fares will increase by roughly R2 from Friday. The deputy chairperson of the association, Slash Mabosebose, explains that during the middle of the pandemic, the association never increased fares even though its effects could be felt on the money they made.

“We understood that the pandemic affects us all and that everyone was suffering. We did not want to make it worse on our commuters, but with the recent fuel price increase, our drivers are not coping. They are now paying R20 per litre and this leaves them with nothing.”

The increases are not drastic with the biggest increase being R2 for a local taxi around town.
