6 disability etiquette tips

National Institute for the Deaf (NID) CEO Dr Lientjie van Rensburg gives six tips for communicating with a disabled person.

POLOKWANE – National Institute for the Deaf (NID) CEO Dr Lientjie van Rensburg said communicating with a person with a disability, may seem daunting to many.

She spoke at a seminar on disability during a stakeholders meeting for sustainable economy in Limpopo, which was held at Fusion Boutique Hotel on November 19.

“Some people are concerned they will embarrass themselves by saying or doing the wrong things. Though these concerns usually come from a good place, they are entirely unnecessary. The most important thing to remember is to treat each person with respect.”

She gives six basic tips:

• Avoid asking personal questions about someone’s disability.
• Be considerate of the extra time it might take for a person to do or say something.
• Be polite and patient when offering assistance, and wait until your offer is accepted.
• Listen or ask for specific instructions. Be prepared for your offer to be refused.
• Relax. Anyone can make mistakes. Offer an apology if you feel you have caused embarrassment.
• Keep a sense of humour, most people with disabilities do, and are willing to communicate.
