Blaq Queen makes a name for herself on the international stage

Mapula Mametja started to sing in her high school choir and now her music is well received in Canada and garners over 600 streams on Spotify. She also reached over 20 000 YouTube views in two months.

POLOKWANE – Blaq Queen has made her mark in the international music scene.

Her real name is Mapula Mametja and she is a 20-year-old house music and khelobedu singer and songwriter from Mankweng.

Mametja started to sing in her high school choir and now her music is well received in Canada and garners over 600 streams on Spotify. She also reached over 20 000 YouTube views in two months.

“I think the reason my music is doing well abroad is because I sing in my home language and the lyrics are catchy. I think good music transcends language barriers, hence people are able to appreciate my music without necessarily understanding what is said,” she explained.

Her song, Taken with Mike SA and Lova, featured on Spotify radio playlists of well-known South African music alongside big names in the industry like Master KG, Makhadzi and Nomcebo Zikode.

Mametja’s dream is to show Limpopo dance music to the rest of the world and looks up to Makhadzi. She hopes to one day motivate other young singers who have similar talents to showcase.

“I would like to one day have a record label and a studio in Mankweng where young people can develop their talents. That is the legacy I want to create as Blaq Queen,” she said.

One of the challenges that Mametja faces is a lack of finances to propel her career to greater heights. She has, however, found help with distribution and production from an electronic dance music producer known as Marvin Larrys.

Her music can be accessed on all music streaming platforms. For bookings, she can be reached on 072 353 4217 or on Facebook at Blaq Queen SA.
