POLOKWANE – Mokgale Mamabolo from Stanford Lake College is using his last year in school to collect as many trophies as he can in athletics.
At the end of January, when the school hosted their inter-house athletics, he set a record in the u/19 long jump and 100m and was awarded the senior Victor Ludorum award.
A week later, at the Independent Schools Athletics gathering he won both the 200m for boys u/19 and the 100m for boys u/19. Even though he set the record for u/19 long jump for boys, he came second and was once again awarded the senior Victor Ludorum trophy.
At the Frikkie Deysel Athletics meeting hosted by Hoërskool Merensky on February 9, Mokgale took part in a few events in the u/19 age group. He won the 100m in a time of 10:97, the 200m in a time of 22:30 (school record), the 400m in 51:57 (school record) and ended third in long jump.
These performances ensured that he once again won the senior Victor Ludorum trophy.
On February 16, Stanford Lake College’s athletics team travelled to Louis Trichardt to take part in the Prestige Athletics event where nine local schools participated. Mokgale was on top form as he set two event records – in the 100m for boys u/19 with a time of 10:72 as well as the 200m with 21:85. He also won the 400m for boys u/19.
Mokgale won the trophy as the best senior boy track athlete and the senior Victor Ludorum trophy, and is one of six Stanford Lake College athletes who qualified to participate in the Limpopo Championships at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in March.
