This local wine will have you saying please and Merci

Kelebogile Maake is the proud owner of Merci Wines, a wine that is produced in South Africa and hit the markets this year.

POLOKWANE – Founder of Merci Wines, Kelebogile Maake from Polokwane believes the market is not welcoming for young black wine makers.

She shared that she worked hard for her brand and is proud to announce that the Merci Wine range is produced in South Africa.

“It is produced in Gordon’s Bay in the Western Cape and transported to Polokwane,” she said.

Maake’s wine brand was created last year but officially sold to the public early this year.

“My name, Kelebogile, means merci in French which means ‘thank you’, and that’s when I decided to give my wines a unique name that people can actually remember. I always loved wine, not to say I’m addicted to it, but it has always been my go-to drink whenever I’m out or simply chilling at home. Wine also has it’s own healthy benefits that some people do not know about,” she said.

She added that through her research prior to starting the business, some benefits of red wine has long been thought of as heart healthy.

“The alcohol and certain substances in red wine called antioxidants may help prevent coronary artery disease which leads to heart attacks,” Maake explained.

Maake added that she thinks there’s a gap in the winemaking industry for the black market.

“For years, especially in South Africa and Africa, we had always believed that this industry is only for white elite society, but I honestly believe that anyone can succeed, regardless of their race if they put their mind and dedication to whatever business they want to start,” she said.

Her favourite wine is cabernet sauvignon.

“I love the fruity flavour with oak and can be paired very easily with meals. The other one is merlot as it has aromas of cherry, dark berries and hints of fynbos,” she said.

Merci Wines has a variety of red, white and rosé wines.

“Local pubs and restaurants are more than welcome to collaborate with Merci Wines as possible suppliers. We also cater personalised wines for various types of events as well as gift boxes. We would really appreciate Polokwane to support and embrace local brands.”
