The Rotary Club of Polokwane welcomes three new members

A local dermatologist, a former mayor and a young business person recently joined the fellowship and undertook to assist the community where possible.

POLOKWNE – The Rotary Club of Polokwane added three new Rotarians to their membership during a recent ceremony at the club’s venue at Our Home/Ons Tuiste, followed by a presentation of Paul Harris Fellow Awards to two ladies who rendered exceptional services to the community.

President Susan van der Merwe inducted local dermatologist Tedros Amha, former mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Stanley Ramaila and young businessman William Wu as new members and said that they are joining a world fellowship of business and professional persons devoted to service to others.

“Service in your Rotary club not only means raising funds for worthy causes and projects, but also giving of one’s time and personal efforts to help those who need us. We welcome you not only for the fine fellowship that we shall share, but also for the strong arm all of you will provide that will assist us to carry out the many projects that are destined to make our country a better place for all,” Van der Merwe said.

Past president Roy Kirkpatrick explained that the Paul Harris Fellow Award was named after the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris.

Rotary is the world’s oldest service organisation and was founded in 1905 in Chicago, Illinois in the US and has grown today to 1.4 million members with almost 40 000 clubs in 162 countries.

Thereafter, Van der Merwe called Shayne Moodie and Sue Kirkpatrick to the podium to receive their Paul Harris Awards.

The two ladies were actively involved in the building of capacity for Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners at centres in Seshego and around the city for the last four years.

“The aim of the project is to empower ECD practitioners to deliver learning through play in line with ELDAS and NELDAS from the National Framework and to raise the standard of intervention in the formative years through practical workshops, activities and games,” Moodie explained.
