Open boxes raise safety concerns among Extensions residents

Ext 44 community representative Mokgadi Moropyane, says they suspect the boxes to be behind the unprecedented power cuts that occur whenever it rains.

POLOKWANE – Open electricity boxes attached to powerlines in the townships along the Matlala road have raised concern among community members about the potential electrical risks.

An increasing number of the boxes are seen open in Extensions 71, 73, 75,76, 44 and 40, with the wiring left susceptible to danger.

Ext 44 community representative Mokgadi Moropyane, says they suspect the boxes to be behind the unprecedented power cuts that occur whenever it rains.

“It is concerning that even if it rains just moderately, our electricity will go off. We would appreciate it if the municipality assists,” Moropyane says.

The effect on residents is similar to that of load-shedding, as appliances become faulty.

Polokwane Municipality spokesperson Thipa Selala said they suspect that boxes are being opened illegally with the aim to steal cables.

“We request the community to report open boxes to our call centre, so we can follow up,” he said.
