Traditions change, but Christmas will always stay
New clothes and a delicious seven-course meals usually were synonymous to Christmas for a lot of families in Limpopo, but has that changed?
LIMPOPO – Previously, families used to get excited about Christmas due its spirit of giving and sharing.
Most children in various communities and villages looked forward to brand-new clothes and delicacies such as the traditional seven-colour meals which are synonymous with the festive season.
Community builder Phuti Ragophala says most households no longer wait for Christmas to participate in these traditions like buying their children new clothes anymore.
“People are economically empowered, they have got money. They no longer wait for Christmas to buy clothes and to prepare extravagant foods. In the olden days, children used to get new clothes from their parents and they used to be excited about it, but now things have changed. The tradition is dying as people become financially empowered and can afford to buy clothes at any given time for their children. The same goes to food, there is no Christmas food anymore. People go to restaurants now and then, and they cook various meals in their homes everyday so they no longer wait for Christmas to prepare something special just for the occasion. People no longer visit each other over the holidays as was the norm in those days,” she explains.
She adds that despite all the notable changes in the tradition around this time, Christmas is still amazing and it is good to see people happy and enjoy each other’s company.
She wishes everyone a wonderful festive season.
