217 Christmas babies delivered in Limpopo

A total of 33 teenage mothers delivered babies across all five districts of Limpopo on Christmas Day.

POLOKWANE – A total of 217 babies were delivered across the province on Christmas day this year.
The Limpopo Department of Health reports that there were more boys delivered than girls with 118 boys and 99 girls.
Health spokesperson Neil Shikwambana said while annual statistics for teenage mothers decreased, teenage mothers increased compared to 2022 by four from 29 to 33, while overall deliveries decreased from 253 to 217.
“All mothers and their babies are doing well,” his statement read. 
Shikwambana urged mothers to exclusively breastfeed for six months and take their children for immunisation according to their schedule.

Vhembe District
61 births
– 35 boys and 26 girls
– Teenage mothers: 12
Sekhukhune District
47 births
– 26 boys and 21 girls
– Teenage mothers: Five
Shikwambana said a boy, weighing 2.8kg was delivered by a 15-year-old girl at 00:05 while a 4.4kg girl was delivered by a 30-year-old woman at the same time.
Mopani District
52 births
– 28 boys and 24 girls
– Teenage mothers: Six
A girl weighing 4.2kg was delivered by a 35-year-old and a boy weighing 3.26kg was delivered by a 16-year-old.
Wateberg District
22 births
– 11 boys and 11 girls
– Teenage mothers: Five
A girl weighing 2.81kg was delivered by a 17-year-old girl.
Capricorn District
35 births
– 18 boys and 17 girls 
– Teenage mothers: Five
