Safety measures to know when on vacation
Whether you're on the beach, in a mall or just enjoying your vacation, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and valuables.
POLOKWANE – The festive season is a period when people let their guard down after a long year of hard work. However, it is also a critical time for criminals to feast on the valuable items that people often forget to tighten safety screws on.
Whether you’re in the mall, on the beach or just enjoying your holiday, it is important to be aware of what is happening around you and take care of your valuables this festive season and beyond.
Safety while on holiday:
The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) community policing forum secretary in Polokwane, Warrant Officer Valerie Maloba it is important to alert home security agencies and reliable neighbours to watch over your home when going on holiday.
“Criminals will take their time to observe a house’s ins and outs. Once they realise that there is no movement, then they will strike. Tell those watching your home for you, to also monitor movements. Remember to tell them how long your trip will take,” Maloba mentions.
She also suggested avoiding posting on social media if you have gone on holiday.
“Criminals are alerted to your absence and movement on social media, therefore the chances of breaking into your houses increases,” she said.
The SAPS advise the following when on holiday, especially in unfamiliar areas:
1. Never display expensive jewellery, cameras, mobile phones or other valuables
2. Do not carry large amounts of money with you
3. Do not leave your handbag unattended and always carry your wallet in an inside pocket.
4. Steer clear of dark and isolated areas at night.
5. If you want to make use of a taxi, your hotel or nearest tourism information office can recommend a reliable service.
6. Never participate in games of chance in the street as this often leads to robbery. Ignore the players and leave the area immediately.
Safety in shopping malls.
The Cornwall Private Security Service has said safety assurance is not guaranteed in malls and everyone can be a suspect.
They shared ways to ensure personal security while still in the parking lot and while already in the mall.
1. Never park in dark, isolated areas, but rather, in areas that are well-lit and have a populous of other vehicles.
2. Take note (mental or otherwise) of where you parked your vehicle.
3. Leave your valuables in your boot and be sure to have your keys ready when returning to your vehicle.
4. When returning, be sure to avoid the shadows and walk in the light.
5. In the Mall: Be alert and walk with confidence. Don’t display large chunks of cash and avoid putting your wallet in your back pocket.
6. Shop with friends or family whenever possible.
7. Keep your shopping bags close to you.
8. Use cashless methods of payment whenever possible.
9. If you see something, say something!
Safety on beaches.
In this case, safety not only lies in the possibility of criminal elements, but also the dangers of being around water.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) advises the following while on the beach:
1. Stay aware of the weather, the ocean, tide, and what is going on around you.
2. Storms, such as thunderstorms and tropical storms far out at sea can create dangerous waves and currents at the beach, even on a sunny day!
3. Even small waves can hit you with the force of a car! Getting knocked down or pinned to the sand can cause serious injury.
4. Know how to swim.
5. Before leaving for the beach, check the official surf zone forecast and/or beach advisories and closings.
