Provincial government geared for busy Easter weekend

Road users and motorists are urged to obey the rules of the road this Easter weekend and mind their driver behaviour.

POLOKWANE – The Premier of Limpopo Chupu Mathabatha has called on road users to be diligent this Easter weekend, with or without being in the presence of traffic officials.

Mathabatha made the call during his keynote address at the recent provincial day of prayer at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in the presence of faith-based organisations.

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety Florence Radzilani was in support of this as she continuously sheds light on human behaviour and reckless driving as the main cause of the 2022 festive season statistics.

Meanwhile, during the 2023 Easter Road Safety Campaign Launch in Tzaneen last week, Radzilani said they noted with concern “sporadic incidents of fatalities which continue to claim innocent lives since the beginning of 2023.”

Radzilani added that the choice of location for the launch was due to the Mopani district recording some of the most horrific fatalities in the province.

“Reckless overtaking has cut short the lives of close to 40 people. There was the bus accident along the N1 near the H.F. Verwoed Tunnel in Makhado where 22 people died because one of the drivers overtook another car where it was unsafe to do so. In another recent accident in the Sekhukhune district, a mini-bus taxi ferrying learners was involved in a multi-vehicle collision which killed 16 people. Seven of those fatalities were children of varying ages,” she explained.

Limpopo tourism MEC, Rodgers Monama says their department is ready to welcome the influx of 023 Easter weekend guests tourism destinations and accommodations.

As a remedy, provincial government will place more traffic officials at strategic points on the road and add more boots to ensure compliance.

On a lighter note, Tourism MEC Rodgers Monama said the department was ready for the influx of guests and visitors this Easter weekend.

Monama strongly believes that Limpopo is a unique province with tourism experiences and packages that far outshine the others.

“Tourism is one of the strongest pillars contributing positively to our provincial economy. We all have a duty to play in ensuring that Limpopo remains top-in-mind whenever people consider taking a shot-left,” he added.
