VIDEO: Increased traffic on N1 marks end of Easter weekend

The Department of Transport said all busy roads are being monitored by traffic officials who are on patrol.

POLOKWANE – Traffic volumes have increased on major roads leading out of Limpopo, marking the end of the long Easter weekend.

The Department of Transport reports increased activity on the N1 southbound towards Gauteng, the R101, R71, R81, the R579 from Lebowakgomo to Apelcross and the D4100 from Apelcross to Groblersdal and Marble Hall.

Transport spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said other areas within the province are reporting low to moderate traffic and that all busy roads are being monitored by traffic officers on visible patrol.

“Drivers traveling out of the province are advised to leave their departure points early, preferably during the daytime, and not drive at night, as the majority of the crashes occur at night when visibility is impaired,” she said.

There is currently slow moving traffic at both the Nyl and Kranskop toll plazas as per Google traffic with long queues and delays expected.

Bakwena Platinum said they are expecting increased traffic volumes on the N1 between 12:00 and early evening.

As at 11:00, over 2 000 vehicles passed through the Carousel toll plaza heading south.

Chuene urged motorists to drive with caution, avoid the use of a cellphone while driving, maintain a safe following distance, take regular breaks, and look out for pedestrians at all times.
