Two people killed in N1 head-on collision

The N1 is now open to motorists after two drivers were killed in a head-on collision early on Tuesday afternoon (March 12).

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed that the N1 between Matoks and Polokwane is now open to motorists following a closure earlier this afternoon.

According to the official accident report, two people were killed when the driver of a truck lost control and collided head-on with an armoured vehicle.

Both drivers, between the ages of 40 and 50-years-old, lost their lives.

One other person sustained serious injuries while another was treated for moderate injuries.

Emergency services were on the scene, including a medivac, but transport spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene confirmed that the scene has been cleared.

Traffic, however, remains congested and motorists are urged to practice patience and caution.

A screenshot of Google traffic shows a back up at the scene of an earlier collision on the N1 outside Polokwane.

Chuene said the possible cause of the accident is fatigue.
