The importance of donating blood

POLOKWANE: Blood is a precious gift that one can give to another. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in Polokwane calls on the public to help save peoples’ lives.
Donating blood is not just about giving to others, it is also taking your time to do something for the nation and the community around you.
Donors can give blood after every eight weeks and it is important to donate more often as it helps to reduce the risk of heart attacks and lower blood pressure.
According to James Mootsi from SANBS Polokwane, donating blood shows that you are a citizen who wants to improve their quality of life by helping others.
It helps to know your blood type and it is important to note that not everyone is eligible to donate such as those living with chronic diseases, however it depends on the kind of disease they have and also the type of medication they are on.
Donors are advised to check first if it is safe for them to donate.
People often wonder where their blood is taken after they donate.
Mootsi explained that the blood is taken to laboratories for further verification and for supply and demand purposes. The blood is then separated into plasma, red cells and platelets and then taken to different hospitals.
“We will be having blood drives from April 13 in areas such as the Mankweng plaza, Paledi Mall and the Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre. We are looking to target 1 500 people and encourage any and everyone to come,” he said.
