Limpopo service aid caught with food meant for patients
The stolen grocery items, which included stewed beef, tinned fish, and fresh milk, were intended to be used in preparing meals for patients.
LIMPOPO – A worker attached to the food service aid section of the Tshilidzini Hospital appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday after reportedly being found in possession of food meant for patients.
The National Health and Allied Workers Union’s (Nehawu) Kennedy Phalanndwa regional secretary, Silas Rangolo said the union was shocked at the allegations and has launched its own investigation. “We are engaging with our shop stewards at ground level, in consultation with the affected employee.” This comes after a food service aid staff member was arrested on April 1 following a security search.
Health spokesperson Neil Shikwambana confirmed the incident.
“The stolen grocery items, which included stewed beef, tinned fish, and fresh milk, were intended to be used in preparing meals for patients. The department condemns this suspected theft from the most vulnerable, which constitutes a breach of trust and a disregard for the well-being of those we serve.”
Acting Vhembe police spokesperson, WO Vuledzani Dathi confirmed the court appearance of a 62 year-old suspect, Ndutanyeni Richard Muvhali.
“He briefly appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on a charge of theft. His case was, however, not placed on the roll and he was later released.”
