By-election: ANC wins ward 10 from EFF

The ANC's provincial secretary Rueben Madadzhe said the win attributes to 11.18% growth since the 2023 by-elections when the party lost the ward by 41.8%.

POLOKWANE – The ANC has reclaimed Ward 10 from the EFF during a by-election on Wednesday.

The EFF had won the ward three times in a row prior to this vote.

The ANC’s Willie Lancelot Madikoto is the new Ward 10 Councilor and will take the reigns after the position was left vacant when the EFF’s Jacob Seshoka resigned from council after being charged with an alleged theft of firearms in January.

According to the IEC’s official by-election results report, Madikoto received 1 811 votes from the 7 110 registered voters in the ward, making up 52.98% of the day’s total votes.

The EFF’s Roslyn Phala received 1 474 votes, making up 43.12% of the votes and resulting in the EFF being the official opposition in the area.

Action SA were third with a total of 63 votes while the Economic Liberators Forum South Africa and the Umkhonto WeSizwe party received 40 and 23 votes respectively.

The IEC’s provincial electoral officer Nkaro Mateta said the voter turn out of 48,5% was pleasing.

The ANC’s provincial secretary Rueben Madadzhe said the win attributes to 11.18% growth since the 2023 by-elections when the party lost the ward by 41.8%.

“The results of the Ward 10 by-election, on the eve of the 2024 general elections, signifies that our people resonate well with the ANC’s message of unity and building a better life for all,” his statement read.

Madadzhe said they call on Madikoto to serve the people of Ward 10 with humility and selfless dedication.
