Local firefighter initiates school shoe donation drive

As a crew leader type one, William Mbewe's responsibilities extend beyond firefighting which led to a school shoe donation drive.

POLOKWANE – William Mbewe, crew leader type one for Working on Fire, finds joy in creating fire awareness campaigns at schools in the city and the province.

His efforts have exceeded beyond firefighting, resonating deeply with the local community.

During his engagement in awareness campaigns at schools, William recognised a prevalent issue among learners which is a lack of proper school shoes.

Moved by this observation and drawing from his own experiences, William initiated a project to provide shoes for learners in need.

Reflecting on his own upbringing, where financial constraints prevented him from having proper school attire, his initiative embodies the character of compassion and community upliftment.

I got inspiration for this project from my own past.

“I know what it is like to go to school without proper shoes, to feel the stigma of not having what others do. Is a small gesture, but it means the world to these children.”

He says as a crew leader type one, his responsibilities extend beyond firefighting.

“I like making a tangible difference in the lives of those around me, whether it is through awareness campaigns, community initiatives, or sporting events.”

In a world where leadership is defined by action, William Matlhatse Mbewe demonstrates the spirit of service and community stewardship.

His journey with Working on Fire continues to inspire others to lead with compassion and purpose, leaving an indelible mark on Sondela Base and beyond.

Working on Fire is a government-funded, job-creation Programme focusing on the prevention and management of wildfires in South Africa.

Through intense training and community engagement, Working on Fire empowers individuals like William Matlhatse Mbewe to protect the environment, save lives, and foster community resilience.
