Madelein Hurst murder: Nephew (28) remanded in custody

Hanno Steinberg is said to have stabbed his aunt multiple times at her home in Phalaborwa before he was stopped by a neighbour.

LIMPOPO – The 28-year-old Hanno Steinberg, who stands accused of allegedly stabbing his aunt to death at her home in Phalaborwa, has been remanded in custody without bail.

Steinberg was arrested shortly after the police responded to a report of a female victim attacked in her home last Tuesday afternoon (July 4).

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the deceased was identified as Madelein Hurst (51) on arrival and was found with multiple stab wounds.

“The suspect was swiftly arrested with assistance from the community,” Ledwaba said.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect entered his aunt’s house, found her lying on the couch and allegedly stabbed her with a knife.

“The victim’s father tried to rescue her while she also ran outside for safety but the suspect overpowered both of them and stabbed the victim multiple times,” Ledwaba said.

The suspect was eventually stopped by a neighbor.

“Further information indicates that the suspect used to stay with the family but was chased out of the house due to unruly behavior,” Ledwaba said.

Steinberg has been charged with murder and appeared before the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court yesterday (July 8) where the case was postponed to Friday for profiling and a formal bail application.
