Polokwane mom turns personal struggle into NPO

Mabina Lischen launches Mommy'Care, a non-profit providing support for mothers' mental health and wellness inspired by her own postpartum struggles.

POLOKWANE – Mabina Ramadimetja Lischen (30) from Ivy Park has launched a non-profit organisation called Mommy’Care, inspired by her personal experiences after becoming a mother in 2019.

She encountered numerous challenges, including postpartum difficulties, loneliness, stress, and anxiety, which often impacted her emotional and mental well-being.

“The core mission of Mommy’Care is to provide emotional and mental support to mothers and connect them with other service providers for further assistance when needed,” Lischen explained.

Initially, the organisation will operate as a 24-hour virtual support group, with plans to evolve into a physical group in the future.

“This support group will offer a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where mothers can openly discuss their struggles.”

Lischen aims to collaborate with mental health organisations, social workers, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive assistance to mothers of all ages.

Regarding funding, she shared that Mommy’Care will seek financial support from businesses, organisations, and government departments that offer NPO funding, along with hosting fundraising events.

“Our goal is to provide in-person services in Polokwane and nearby areas, but the virtual support group will be accessible to any mother, regardless of where she lives,” she added.

Her first major milestone? “To have supported 200-300 mothers and help them understand that it’s okay to ask for help – they don’t need to be strong all the time.”

With Mommy’Care, Lischen hopes to create a network of support, ensuring that no mother feels alone in her journey.
