Limpopo cops investigate bribery scandal involving foreign national

A foreign national allegedly attempted to bribe the officer, promising a substantial sum of money in exchange for not opposing bail for a family member.

POLOKWANE – The police are delving into an apparent bribery scandal involving a 39-year-old foreign national, Raphael Mupaya, who appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday.

Mupaya, currently in police custody, will return to court this week for a formal bail application and further investigations.

Police spokesperson Brig Hlulani Mashaba reported that an incident unfolded when an investigating officer travelled to Gauteng last Monday as part of a case involving a 30-year-old man who was arrested in the Polokwane area last month for possession of explosives.

According to the police, Mupaya allegedly attempted to bribe the officer, promising a substantial sum of money in exchange for not opposing bail for his nephew, the explosives suspect.

The officer alerted authorities, prompting an intelligence-driven operation. Mupaya travelled to the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court the next day, reportedly carrying the bribe money. He was arrested after handing over the cash.

Police investigations continue as the suspect remains in custody.
