Lim Agriculture MEC pledges support for Nwanedi Valley

MEC Nakedi Kekana visited Nwanedi Valley to engage with local farmers, reaffirming support for sustainable farming and economic growth.

LIMPOPO – The MEC for Agriculture, Nakedi Kekana, reaffirmed her commitment to empowering local farmers during a recent project visit to the Nwanedi Valley.

The visit formed part of her mission to engage with beneficiaries of the department’s Farmer Support Programme and oversee farm production and facility operations in the area.

Earlier this year, the department provided Global GAP equipment to local farmers, a significant milestone aimed at enhancing food safety standards and enabling smallholder producers to adopt efficient farm management practices. This initiative is designed to increase their competitiveness and facilitate entry into international markets.

During her visit, Kekana spoke about the department’s ongoing support in critical areas such as irrigation, production input and mechanisation resources.

“These efforts are geared towards boosting farming productivity, ensuring sustainability, alleviating poverty, and reducing the cost of living,” Kekana said.

She highlighted the department’s broader vision to expand primary agricultural production in Limpopo while promoting inclusive participation in the agricultural value chain. By supporting smallholder farmers, the department aims to foster economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty, she said.

Farmers in Tshialatshitswu, who are currently harvesting 20 hectares of butternut with plans for an additional 8 hectares of crops, said they were hopeful to thrive despite challenges like water shortages and the ongoing heatwave.

“Through initiatives such as Global GAP equipment and continued resource support, we aim to help farmers succeed and contribute to the province’s agricultural development,” the MEC concluded.
