R300 bribe lands drunk driver in hot water on the N1

A drunk driver was arrested on the N1 in Mokopane after trying to bribe traffic officers with R300 on Good Friday, says the RTMC.

MOKOPANE – A drunk driver who attempted to bribe traffic officers was arrested on Good Friday on the N1 near Mokopane.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the motorist was pulled over during a stop-and-check operation conducted by the National Traffic Police.

When officers discovered that he was under the influence, he allegedly offered them R300 to avoid arrest.

“The officers immediately arrested him and transported him to the Mokopane Police Station where he was charged with bribery and drunk driving,” a press release read.

The RTMC praised the officers involved for their integrity and commitment to road safety.

“Traffic officers are not for sale, and road safety is not negotiable,” the statement read.

With weekends and public holidays seeing a spike in such incidents, the RTMC confirmed that intensified drunk driving operations would continue throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile, a man caught speeding at 214km/h on the N1 near Mokopane was granted bail after appearing in court on Friday.

Chuene, this morning, said traffic volumes are expected to be normal in the province today, providing a better driving experience.

“Provincial and municipal law enforcement authorities, along with national traffic police, are working together to ensure road safety, focusing on curbing high-risk behaviour (reckless driving, speeding, drunk driving) and pedestrian safety,” she said.

She added that no fatal accidents have been reported thus far.
