Polokwane teacher’s novel tackles GBV crisis

Johannes Ramakgolo releases 'Beyond the Bruises', a novel addressing gender-based violence and inspiring healing and awareness.

POLOKWANE – Bringing much-needed attention to the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV), Polokwane teacher and author Johannes Ramakgolo has released his new book, ‘Beyond the Bruises’.

The work dives deep into the emotional and societal layers of GBV, giving readers a story that aims to spark healing, awareness and action.

“I believe this is the perfect time to start meaningful conversations around this critical issue. The book is my way of contributing to ongoing efforts to combat GBV in our communities.”

A seasoned teacher, Ramakgolo is the acting deputy principal and teacher at Flora Park Comprehensive Primary School. His writing is informed by his experience in education and an understanding of community dynamics.

“Writing comes naturally to me. Over the years, I’ve developed a sense of self-awareness about what I do and why I do it. As a writer, I understand that every word and action has an impact, and I always try to be intentional with both.”

It tells the gripping story of Lucy Rapholo, whose life begins under the shadow of the imposing Hwiti mountain. Trapped by tradition and facing an arranged marriage that threatens to extinguish her dreams, Lucy chooses defiance.  Her journey takes her from a dusty village to the vibrant streets of Cape Town, where she seeks anonymity, freedom, and reinvention.

Ramakgolo hopes that Lucy’s story will serve as a mirror and a beacon for those dealing with GBV, empowering them with awareness and pathways to healing.

Ramakgolo brings a unique perspective to his storytelling. His leadership roles across schools in Limpopo and Gauteng have further deepened his insights into family, school, and community struggles.

“My journey in education and my dedication to community development have helped shape the stories I tell. “They allow me to bring empathy, realism, and urgency to the themes I explore,” he concluded.
