Probes underway after allegations of attempted rape at Mokopane hospital

Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego visited George Masebe Hospital after allegations of attempted rape by a doctor surfaced; investigations are underway.

MOKOPANE – Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego visited the George Masebe Hospital on Tuesday after allegations that a doctor in the hospital’s service attempted to rape a 22-year-old patient.

Mashego said she noted with disappointment the reported incident that occurred in the early hours of April 27 in the sonar room during an abdominal ultrasound, which was required as part of the patient’s ongoing observation relating to her pregnancy.

“Hospitals are supposed to be havens for the weak and vulnerable and healthcare professionals are expected to exhibit above reproach conduct in order to cement this expectation. The department pledges to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies, as this matter has been reported to the police for further investigation.”

She added that the department takes the allegations seriously. “In addition to supporting the police inquiry, we have initiated our own internal investigation to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding this incident,” she concluded.

In the meantime, acting provincial police commissioner Major General Samuel Manala ordered a full and thorough investigation into the matter.

“Crimes of this nature are extremely serious and particularly disturbing when committed by individuals entrusted with the care of vulnerable members of our community. We are treating this case with the urgency and sensitivity it deserves, and we urge anyone who may have additional information to come forward.”

A rape case has been opened and investigations continue.
