LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety says the R101 between Mokopane and Mookgohong is open following a fatal collision between a truck and a state vehicle this morning (August 14).

The department confirms that six people were killed, including one police officer and five awaiting trial inmates, and not five in total as previously reported.

It is understood that six seriously injured awaiting trial inmates were transported to the HF Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle (three), the Voortrekker Hospital in Mokopane (two) and one airlifted to the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital.

“The circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation and we urge all parties involved to exercise caution and patience as the investigation unfolds,” a statement by transport spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene reads.

Chuene says the department will work closely with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that Limpopo’s roads are safe for all users.

“We appeal to drivers to exercise caution and adhere to road safety rules to prevent tragedies like this from occurring in the future.”
