Limpopo education leader Vhustshilo Makananise makes M&G 200 list
From rural Vhembe to the global stage, Vhustshilo Makananise has been recognised by Mail & Guardian as one of 200 Young South Africans for 2025.
LIMPOPO – Vhustshilo Makananise from Lwamondo Tshivhale village, has been named one of the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans for 2025.
A higher education leader and advocate for internationalisation, Makananise holds a BA and BA honours degree in international relations from the University of Venda.
He now works as a programme officer at the British High Commission in Pretoria, leading scholarship and partnership programmes that connect South African students with opportunities abroad, including the prestigious Chevening Scholarships.
Passionate about giving back, Makananise co-founded the Vhamandafhadzi Foundation, which provides mentorship, career guidance, and educational support to youth in rural communities.
He is also the author of ‘Evolution of My Consciousness’, reflecting on his personal and educational journey.
Reflecting on the recognition, he said, “This honour is not just about me, it is about every young South African who dares to dream despite obstacles. It reminds me of my responsibility to keep opening doors for others”.
Through his work, writing and community initiatives, Makananise continues to champion education as a tool for empowerment and transformation in the Vhembe region and beyond.
