POLOKWANE – The Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed that five people lost their lives in the head-on collision on the N1 Ysterberg early this morning (Saturday, August 30)

According to the department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene, two sedans collided, killing five occupants and injuring two others.

Four of the deceased were burnt beyond recognition. The injured – the driver and a passenger – were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“Preliminary reports suggest one of the vehicles may have attempted to overtake when the crash occurred. Although the investigation is ongoing, reckless driving has not been ruled out as a contributing factor,” says Chuene.

MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“Our hearts are with the families and next of kin of those who lost their loved ones. I urge all road users to be patient and responsible. These crashes are deeply concerning and often linked to reckless driving.”

The department also noted that poor visibility during early morning and late evening hours has contributed to a recent rise in accidents on the Ysterberg mountain. Plans are underway to improve safety along the route to prevent further loss of life.
