From psychology to wellness: Tumelo Mothapo’s inspiring business story

Tumelo Mothapo turned a childhood gift for healing into a mobile massage therapy business, blending psychology with holistic wellness.

POLOKWANE – Tumelo Hazel Mothapo (35) knows from experience that success is not an easy road, but resilience has guided her journey in business.

Although she holds a BA degree in criminology and psychology, Mothapo chose to follow her passion by obtaining a diploma in massage therapy. That passion, she explained, stems from her childhood.

“Growing up, my father suffered from leg problems, and at one point doctors even suggested amputation. I would soak and rub his feet to relieve the pain, and that is where my passion began at just seven years old. My mother, a domestic worker, often had backaches, and out of all the children she always chose me to massage her. She used to say I had healing hands and a unique touch. That encouragement stayed with me and led me to turn a childhood skill into a career,” she said.

In 2019, combining her background in psychology with her “healing hands”, Mothapo launched her mobile massage therapy business. Just as she was establishing her brand, however, the Covid-19 pandemic forced her to put her work on hold.

She was able to relaunch in 2021, viewing it as a second chance to pursue her passion.

“As a mobile spa, we had the opportunity to serve a wide range of clients – from different age groups and backgrounds, including people living with disabilities. My psychology background helps me understand client behaviour and emotional well-being, which blends beautifully with holistic healing practices like massage,” she said.

Over the years, Mothapo has partnered with hotels, restaurants, hiking clubs and old age homes.

These collaborations, she says, have taught her the importance of inclusivity, flexibility and the power of partnerships in wellness.

Because every client is different, Mothapo begins each session with a short consultation to identify specific needs, whether stress, muscle pain, or deep relaxation.

“I then adjust the pressure, technique, and even the choice of oils based on their needs and feedback. My psychology background also helps me tune into their emotional and physical state, allowing me to provide a more personalised and therapeutic experience,” she added.
