Limpopo man gets 15 years for attempted rape of vulnerable woman

A Limpopo man has been sentenced to 15 years for attempting to rape a mentally challenged woman in Sengatane village in May 2024.

POLOKWANE – A 29-year-old man, Doctor Papo Chuene, has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for the attempted rape of a mentally challenged woman (34) in Sengatane village, under the Seshego policing area.

The incident took place on May 26, 2024, when the victim was on her way to a local spaza shop.

Chuene allegedly called her and when she ignored him, he grabbed her and dragged her to a corner where he attempted to rape her.

The woman screamed for help, and members of the public in a passing taxi rushed to her rescue.

Chuene fled the scene and the matter was immediately reported to police.

Following an intensive manhunt, Chuene was arrested the next day at a hideout in the same village.

The Limpopo police say the case was later transferred to the Seshego Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, with Constable Rotshidzwa Mafadza leading the investigation.

“After several court appearances, Chuene was convicted and sentenced last Friday (August 29) in the Seshego Regional Court,” police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the verdict, stating: “This conviction is a clear demonstration that the police will continue to ensure justice for victims, especially the most vulnerable in our communities. Criminals who prey on women and children will face the full might of the law.”
