Down Syndrome SA to host awareness picnic in Polokwane
Polokwane will host a Down Syndrome Awareness picnic on October 20, celebrating inclusion and support for families.
POLOKWANE – Down Syndrome South Africa (DSSA) is collaborating with the Polokwane Support Group to host a family picnic as part of the celebration of National Down Syndrome Awareness Day on October 20.
DSSA is the national umbrella body of 12 regional associations, outreach and support groups across the country.
They advocate for the rights and inclusion of persons with Down’s Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities, working hand-in-hand with member organisations to raise awareness, empower families, support individuals and create opportunities for meaningful inclusion in all areas of life.
The national theme continues the focus from the 2025 World Down Syndrome Day, ‘Improve Our Support Systems’.
Through the event, they aim to highlight the importance of inclusive support systems while celebrating the beauty, uniqueness and abilities of persons with Down’s Syndrome and intellectual disabilities.
Dionne Davidson from the Polokwane Outreach for Down Syndrome South Africa is inviting stakeholders to partner with them to make the event a success.
“We anticipate welcoming approximately 300 guests, including individuals with Down’s Syndrome and intellectual disabilities who will proudly be celebrating their extra chromosome,” she said.
To make this event a success, they are seeking support in the following areas:
• An accessible and centrally located venue in or around Polokwane.
• Transport or contributions towards transport for participants and families.
• Gazebos for shading for the event (these can be collected and returned).
• Cold drinks and bottled water for attendees.
• Prizes for lucky draws.
• Items for the craft and entertainment stations.
• Cash donation towards catering.
“Any other contribution you would like to make to enable us to host an event that will be memorable for our members. Your support would mean so much, not only to us but to the many families and individuals who look forward to this occasion as a moment of joy, pride and belonging,” she added.
As a registered public benefit organisation, DSSA will issue an 18A tax-deductible certificate for any donation or contribution received and in recognition of support, they will include sponsors and donors company logos on the event programme, official invite and across their social media platforms.
