Lephalale crash claims 5 lives

Tragedy strikes Limpopo’s R518 as five people die in a head-on collision, with six survivors recovering in hospital.

LIMPOPO – Limpopo is once again mourning lives lost on the province’s roads after a head-on collision claimed five lives late on Friday (September 26).

The crash happened along the R518 in the Lephalale Municipality, Waterberg District. According to reports from the Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, a sedan allegedly attempted to overtake and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle.

Both drivers died instantly, along with three female passengers. Six other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Law enforcement authorities have indicated that reckless driving may have contributed to the crash, though a formal investigation is still underway.

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Florence Radzilani Mathye, extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“On behalf of the people of Limpopo, I wish to extend our condolences to the families of those who perished and wish the injured a speedy recovery. These are difficult times, and we are comforted by the fact that our Lord will eventually heal the pain,” she said.

With the weekend seeing increased traffic due to religious gatherings and family activities, the department has pledged to strengthen law enforcement visibility on the roads.

Motorists are urged to avoid reckless driving and exercise patience to ensure that they and their loved ones arrive safely.
