SAWS updates forecast: Polokwane now under Level 1 thunderstorm warning
The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 1 severe thunderstorm warning for Polokwane, with risks of flooding, hail, and strong winds from October 8–9.
POLOKWANE – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 1 severe thunderstorm warning for Polokwane and surrounding areas, valid from 14:00 today until 22:59 tomorrow (October 9).
The warning, which was posted at midday, comes despite earlier reports that no severe thunderstorm alerts were in place for the city.
According to the SAWS, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng, with a medium likelihood of storms becoming severe over the central and western parts of these provinces.

SAWS warns that the storms could lead to:
- Localised flooding of roads, low-lying areas, and bridges.
- Damage to roofs, homes, and structures due to hail or strong winds.
- Disruption of services, including power surges and injuries caused by lightning.
Motorists and residents are urged to exercise caution, particularly when driving in heavy rain or crossing flooded areas.
The public is also advised to stay indoors during lightning activity and to secure outdoor items that could be damaged or blown away by strong winds.

The latest advisory follows Tuesday’s heavy thunderstorm in Polokwane, which brought strong winds, lightning, and intense downpours.
The SAWS has encouraged residents to continue monitoring official weather updates through trusted channels.
