Freedom Day tragedy as teen drowns in Vhembe

A Freedom Day outing ended in tragedy when a Kutama High School learner drowned in deep water in Midoroni, raising concerns over river safety.

LIMPOPO – A Freedom Day outing by three young boys ended in tragedy when a 16-year-old Gr 9 learner from Kutama High School drowned in a stream at Midoroni on April 27.

Teen swept into deep water

Tshilidzi Manenzhe had gone to the stream with two friends to cool off. It is reported that the boys entered the water together, but Tshilidzi drifted into a deep area and drowned.

When his friends realised he was in trouble, they tried to rescue him, but the water was too deep and murky. They then ran to alert their parents and community members.

Body recovered after search

The family contacted police, who later recovered his body from the deep water.

Police warn of rising water dangers

Vhembe police spokesperson Capt Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that an investigation is underway and warned children against swimming in rivers, streams and dams.

“Many smaller dams, streams and rivers have filled up considerably after the recent heavy rains. Children often misjudge the depth of the water or the strength of the currents, leading to tragic drownings,” he said.

More awareness campaigns planned

Dathi added that police expect more drowning incidents due to overflowing water sources and said officers will soon visit schools to raise awareness about water safety.

Community leaders urge caution

Senior traditional leader Thovhele Vele Kutama also cautioned parents and children to avoid dangerous water areas, saying a community meeting would be held urgently to address the risks.

Tshilidzi Manenzhe was laid to rest at Tshikhodobo on Saturday.
