UPDATE: Modimolle murder suspect to appear in court
The husband of a slain correctional officer has handed himself over to police following a fatal shooting in Modimolle.
LIMPOPO – A 38-year-old man is expected to appear in the Modimolle District Court on Thursday, May 14, in connection with the fatal shooting of his wife, a correctional services officer, in Modimolle.
Suspect handed himself over to police
Police confirmed that the suspect, who is the husband of the deceased, handed himself over to Nebo Police on Tuesday evening, May 12, shortly after the incident.
Shooting outside workplace
It is alleged that the victim, also 38, was walking from her rented room to her workplace at the Modimolle Correctional Centre along Nelson Mandela Road at around 06:30 when she was approached by the suspect.
An altercation reportedly ensued, during which she was shot twice in the upper body. She was certified dead at the scene.
Investigation underway
The Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit has taken over the investigation and confiscated a licensed firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.
While the motive has not yet been confirmed, police say a domestic-related dispute cannot be ruled out.
Police condemn incident
Limpopo provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe has condemned the incident and urged couples experiencing domestic challenges to seek professional assistance.
Police investigations are continuing.
