UPDATE: 3 killed in horror N1 head-on collision near Botlokwa

Police are investigating a fatal head-on collision that claimed three lives on the N1 near Ga-Phasha outside Botlokwa.

LIMPOPO –Three people died in a head-on collision on the N1 near Ga-Phasha outside Botlokwa on Friday evening, May 15.

According to police, officers from the Botlokwa policing area responded to reports of a serious crash at about 18:50.

Police spokespersons said a white Hyundai i20 and a Toyota Corolla Sprinter were involved in the collision.

Preliminary information indicates the Hyundai was travelling northbound when it collided with the southbound Toyota.

Victims declared dead on scene

The driver of the Hyundai, who was alone in the vehicle, was declared dead on the scene by emergency medical personnel.

A man and woman travelling in the Toyota were trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated using hydraulic rescue equipment. Both were also declared dead on the scene.

Investigation underway

The identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending formal identification and notification of next of kin.

Police have opened a case of culpable homicide. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
