7 ‘jailbirds’ do time at Savannah Mall for charity
A makeshift jail, seven "suspects" and a whole lot of goodwill. The Jail and Bail fundraiser is back for its third year.
POLOWKANE – The third annual Jail and Bail event was held at Savannah Mall on October 2 to raise money for the Polokwane Neighbourhood Watch.
The annual event raises money for much-needed equipment used by the neighbourhood watch for its operations and patrols of the city’s streets. These patrols are conducted by volunteers from the organisation and the community.

Seven ‘suspects’ detained
According to the organisation’s public relations officer, Gerhard Franken, seven people were “arrested”, with seven companies pledging funds towards their bail.

“The ‘suspects’ were detained at the entrance of Savannah Mall in a makeshift jail supplied by Expanda, while Ithuba Security Service executed the arrests. Our ‘jailbirds’ were fed by Mugg & Bean and Spur Savannah,” Franken said.
The event was held in conjunction with the Limpopo Tourism Holiday Fair to attract more exposure to the neighbourhood watch’s cause.

The courtroom roles
Barry Viljoen acted as magistrate, with Gregg Ragoasha as prosecutor and Polokwane Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Johan Spaumer as defence attorney.

Naledi Franken served as witness in all the cases, with Duan Botha as the jail warden.
‘A safe Polokwane is a progressive Polokwane’
“Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all our sponsors and the wider community who understand that a safe Polokwane is a progressive Polokwane,” Franken concluded.
