POLOKWANE –  With the Local Government Elections just a few days away, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has urged voters to prepare now to ensure a smooth experience at the polls on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.

Voting stations across the country will open from 07:00 to 21:00. For voters in Polokwane, the key to a quick and hassle-free vote is knowing what to bring, what to expect, and exactly where to go.

What you must bring

The most important item on Election Day is your valid South African identity document. According to the IEC, only three forms of ID are accepted:

• A green, barcoded ID book
• A smart ID card
• A valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC)

What is not accepted

• A driver’s licence
• Apassport
• Or a photocopy of your ID

What you should know before you go

Check where you are registered. For local government elections, you can only vote at the voting station where you are registered. You cannot vote at any other station.

To check your registration status and find your correct voting station, you can:

• Visit the IEC website at www.elections.org.za
• SMS your ID number to 32810
• Call the IEC contact centre on 0800 11 8000
• Use the IEC mobile app or WhatsApp chatbot

What happens when you arrive

The IEC has outlined a simple step-by-step process for voters:

1. Present your ID to the door controller. They will scan it and confirm you are a registered voter.
2. Check the voters’ roll. An official will find your name and cross it off to ensure you only vote once. Your left thumbnail will be inked.
3. Collect your ballot papers. Ensure the back of each ballot paper is stamped with the official IEC stamp.
4. Mark your choice. Go to an empty booth and make a single, clear “X” next to your preferred party or candidate.
5. Cast your vote. Fold your ballot paper and drop it into the ballot box.

If you make a mistake before putting your ballot in the box, you can ask the presiding officer for a replacement. Once it is in the box, it cannot be removed.

Voters will be given three ballot papers:

• One ballot to elect a ward councillor.
• One ballot to choose a political party for representation on he relevant municipal council.
• One ballot for political party representation on the district council, where applicable.

A survival kit for the queues

While the IEC does not prescribe a formal “survival kit,” previous elections have seen long queues. Voters are advised to bring:

• Water to stay hydrated
• Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) as you may be waiting outdoors
• Comfortable shoes and clothing
• Any necessary medication you might need during the day
• Patience and a friendly attitude towards election officials

You can use your phone to check information, but photographing a marked ballot paper is strictly prohibited.
