Easy back to school lunchbox ideas
Dietician Masenya encouraged parents to create a bento styled lunchbox with different compartments filled with bite-sized foods.
POLOKWANE – Deciding on what to incorporate into a child’s lunchbox can be a challenge for parents.
Dietician Mosima Masenya said that children love to see colourful things regardless of what it is or where they are.
“When preparing your child’s lunch box you should aim for two to three different types of fruit or vegetable, one-quarter with whole grains and the remaining quarter with healthy proteins,” Masenya said.
Masenya encouraged parents to create a bento styled lunchbox with different compartments filled with bite-sized foods, this creates a easy and fun way for children to eat their lunch. This can include cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, cubes of cheese, a boiled egg, whole grain crackers and a handful of grapes,” she said.
“Fill half your child’s plate or lunch box with colourful fruits or vegetables, which will help the lunchbox look colourful as well,” Masenya said.
She concluded that foods such as chicken strips, eggs (whether boiled or fried), oven bakes fries and fishfingers pair nicely with brown or white bread cut into bite-sizes.
