MEPS star Lufuno Mphahlele makes Tuks first team at just 17
At just 17, MEPS learner Lufuno Mphahlele joins Tuks senior team after an impressive 22-goal season showing skill and determination.
POLOKWANE – Lufuno Mphahlele, a 17-year-old learner at MEPS, is quickly emerging as one of South Africa’s brightest football talents.
The young striker has already turned heads with his performances both at MEPS and during the professional trials, earning a spot on the University of Pretoria (Tuks) senior team, which competes in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, South Africa’s second football tier.
Lufuno’s journey began at MEPS, where he quickly became known for his sharp instincts, lightning pace, and lethal finishing.
During the 2024/25 school season, he was unstoppable – scoring 22 goals and providing three assists in 20 matches, leading his team through a highly successful campaign.
His consistency, work ethic, and eye for a goal caught the attention of scouts from Tuks, one of the country’s most respected football academies. Invited for trials with the Tuks professional setup, Lufuno made an immediate impact, scoring five goals and providing two assists in just three trial matches.
Out of over 200 hopeful players, he was one of only two selected to join the senior team.
Now, as the youngest player in the Tuks first team, Lufuno is preparing to make his mark in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, a proving ground for many future Premier Soccer League (PSL) stars.
Coaches and teammates alike praise Lufuno for his humility, discipline and hunger to improve.
With his natural goal-scoring ability and fearless approach to the game, many believe he could become one of South Africa’s most promising forwards in the years to come.
“His inclusion not only highlights his personal achievement but also symbolises the growing opportunities for young South African players willing to work hard and dream big. Well done to you, Lufuno. Fly the flag high,” said MEPS principal Sandy Pitsi.
