Cathleen van Vuuren shares her vision for her incoming Gr 8 class

Jabez Christian Academy teacher Cathleen van Vuuren shares how she is preparing for the 2026 Grade 8 class through curriculum updates and supportive learning strategies.

POLOKWANE – As schools prepare for the academic year ahead, Gr 8 teacher Cathleen van Vuuren from Jabez Christian Academy says she is already hard at work planning for a successful and spiritually grounded 2026.

A devoted born-again Christian and passionate educator, Van Vuuren says she approaches each new year with intention, excitement and a heart for developing young learners.

She told the Review that moving from primary to high school is one of the biggest transitions for learners, and teachers play a crucial role in making that journey smoother and more meaningful.

“I’m enthusiastically preparing for a year of significant learning and growth,” she said. “Grade 8 is an important foundation year, and I want to make sure my learners feel supported, inspired and ready for the challenges ahead.”

Key focus areas for the 2026 Grade 8 class

Van Vuuren’s preparation centres on four major initiatives designed to strengthen learning, nurture confidence and encourage spiritual development.

1. Curriculum integration

She is currently re-evaluating the Gr 8 curriculum to ensure it blends strong biblical principles with practical, hands-on learning activities.

Her goal is to help learners apply Christian values while developing critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills.

2. Classroom environment

Van Vuuren believes that learning begins with atmosphere.

She is working on creating a welcoming, vibrant and stimulating classroom that feels safe, inclusive and ready to receive the new Gr 8 learners.

“A positive environment motivates children to learn and grow,” she said.

3. Experiential learning

Plans are underway for an educational field trip or school camp in 2026.

These activities aim to provide enriching learning experiences beyond textbooks, while also promoting team building, independence and practical life skills.

4. Remedial support

To assist learners who may struggle with reading or writing, Van Vuuren is exploring efficient remedial strategies to help them catch up quickly.

“My goal is to provide targeted, quick solutions so they can confidently rejoin their classmates,” she explained.

She concluded with a heartfelt message for the incoming learners:

“All the best to the Gr 7 learners who will be joining me in Grade 8 next year. I look forward to teaching all of you and making it another successful and blessed year.”

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
