Through rose tinted glasses: When good sense and calamity collide

Those who know me know I have a slight tendency to overreact. This often leads to humiliation and awkward situations.

I have a little pup called Pippa. She isn’t a pup anymore, but she is so small and cuddly that I think of her as the baby in the house.

Pippa’s strength in life is not really brilliant timing. As soon as she gets excited, she runs into things and she manages to fall into the pool almost every time we take a dip. We are always very aware to keep a close eye on her. A while ago, I was on the loo (sorry for that piece of info, but it is integral to the storyline), when I heard a splashing sound and I realised that Pippa was in the pool again. Now we all know that there is a limit on how fast a person can safely and hygenically get off the loo… As I ran outside, I feared that I took too long already. Now would be a good time to mention that my mother’s puppy drowned in her pool a few years ago while I was outside and I was just too late to save him, so this was my worst nightmare. As I ran outside, I could see Roxie, our older dog, standing next to the pool, peering into the water.

I couldn’t see Pippa nor any ripples on the water. I screamed “Pippa, I’m coming!” and ran straight into the pool.

I didn’t even stop to look where the dog was. I started searching for her and couldn’t see anything. I was hysterical with tears running down my face from fear. Only to look up at the poolside and see Pippa quietly sitting next to Roxy, staring at me with her little green eyes.

She was dripping wet, but safe and quite confused by her “mommy” having a breakdown in the water. Needless to say: she got out on her own.

The ordeal would be okay if my screaming and hysterics didn’t prompt most of our neighbours (we live next to an apartment complex) to peer over the wall and gawp at the crazy lady in the water.

I can never go outside again, ever.
