Common homeopathic remedies for healthier living

Homeopaths believe if a substance can produce the symptoms of illness when taken in a large dose, it has the potential to heal the same symptoms when taken in an infinitesimally small dose.

And it does this without causing any harm.

Mercurius solubilise (Merc Sol) from the metal mercury

Use for: Swollen glands, coated tongue, profuse sweating, increased thirst, offensive breath and perspiration feeling alternately hot and cold, irritability and restlessness along with other symptoms.

Nux vomica (Nux vom) from Strychnos nux vomica

Use for: Gastrointestinal upset, especially after a rich meal. Undigested food lying like a weight in the stomach. Feeling of nausea, but inability to vomit. Feeling that bowel movements are incomplete. Heartburn.

Pulsatilla (Puls) from the pasque flower Pulsatilla nigricans

Use for: Conditions in which emotional symptoms such as weepiness, clinginess and changeable moods predominate, especially in children. Yellow-green discharges, from nose or eyes, menstrual problems. Symptoms helped by sympathy and huge as well as fresh, cool air.

Rhus toxicodendron (Rhus tox) from poison ivy

Use for: Sprains and stiffness in joints that are eased by gentle motion. Symptoms that are better for warmth and worse for cold and damp, or are accompanied by extreme restlessness. Red, itchy, painful rashes.

Ruta from herb Ruta graveolens

Use for: Bruises near the bones, as from kick on the shin. Strains to joints such as ankles and wrists. Symptoms made better by warmth.

Gelsenmium = Gels. Yellow Jasmine

Use for: Flue with weak, achy muscles, tiredness, weakness, shivering, fever, little thirst and Anxiety that includes trembling.

Hepar sulphuris calcareum=Hepar sulph. Compound of calcium and sulphur by heating oyster shells and calcium sulphide

Use for: Sore throat that feels as though something is stuck in throat. Harsh, dry cough with yellow mucus. Boils and abscesses not healing. Extreme irritability, coldness and sour-smelling perspiration.

Hypericum =Hyper. European herb St John’s wort

Use for: Bruising of sensitive areas, such as fingers, toes, lips, ears, eyes and coccyx. Shooting pains along nerve pathways.

Ignatia =Ign. St Ignatius bean a tree

Use for: Sadness and grief following emotional loss. Pent-up grief in which the tears will not flow. Mood swing.

Ipecacuanha =Ipecac. Dried root of South American shrub Cephaelis ipecacuanha

Use for: Nausea and vomiting, whether or not accompanied by other symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, headache or diarrhoea. Morning sickness.

Ledum = Led. Shrub known as marsh tea

Use for: Puncture wounds, as from splinters nails or stings that look puffy and feel cold. Pain eased by cold compressed. Eye injuries that look puffy and bloodshot and feel cold to the touch. Insect bites.

Aconite (Acon) from monkshood plant

Used for: High fever, often coming suddenly in night. Extreme thirst and perspiration. Symptoms that arise from a chill or fright. Dry coughs in children. Fear or extreme anxiety along with other symptoms.

Apis (Apis) from honeybee

Used for: Swelling in which the affected area is red and puffy or seems fluid-filled. Burning and stinging pains. Irritability and restlessness. Symptoms relieved by cool air or cold compresses.

Arnica (Arn.) from herb Arnica Montana

Used for: Shock from injury. Muscle strain, jet lag, postoperative recovery. Bruising where skin is not broken.

Arsenicum album (Ars.alb.) Arsenic trioxide safe in homeopathic doses

Used for: Vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal and stomach cramps, such as might arise after food poisoning. Head colds with runny nose. Symptoms relieved by warmth and sips of cold water. Anxiety, chilliness, restlessness and weakness.

Belladonna (Bell.) from nightshade plant Atropa belladonna

Used for: High fever, perhaps with delirium, which comes on suddenly. Burning dry skin, red face and little thirst with the fever. Throbbing pains, especially in the head are. Dilated pupils and oversensitivity to light.

Bryonia (Bry.) from bryony plant Bryonia alba

Used for: Slowly developing fever, Dry painful coughs relieved by holding the chest. Extreme thirst for large amounts of cold water. Symptoms that are worse for slight motion. Irritability, desire to be left alone.
